Undisciplined is an art-based research institute using artistic expression to generate, interpret, and communicate research knowledge on science and technology innovation.
Our mission is to empower science and technology research and communication through art and public engagement that connects with society.
A brainchild of researcher and artist Imani Cooper Mkandawire Ph.D, Undisciplined begin as a teaching philosophy dedicated to advancing artful pathways to exploring STEM topics in a university setting. As a first generation student with a Gullah Geechee heritage, Dr. Mkandawire is aware how cultural context, and socioeconomic status can significantly shape knowledge and understanding. After obtaining her PhD, and teaching in higher education for almost 10 years, she wanted to create a space that centered innovation around learning, imagining new modes of knowing, and systems of knowledge production. A space to explore the possibilities of education when the cultural, social, and environmental implications of knowledge and intelligence are at the fore.
With the help of the Mozilla Creative Media Award Undisciplined presents its first project exploring AI data science through African American heritage.
