The workshop consists of two engaging modules:

Module 1: Cultural Context and Data Reclassification
Begin by immersing yourself in the basics of Gullah Geechee culture and foundational concepts of data collection. Participants will explore a curated Gullah cultural data gallery, where they will reclassify historic objects using a cosmological framework unique to Gullah culture. This activity highlights the importance of cultural perspective in shaping how data is categorized and understood.

Module 2: Missing Data and Cultural Practices in AI
Dive deeper with Calculate {Freedom}, a short film that sets the stage for a thought-provoking discussion on missing and dark data methods. Participants will then interact with a machine learning algorithm that decodes specific moments from the film using screenshots. The algorithm reveals the cultural practices embedded in the protagonist’s actions, showcasing the critical role cultural competency plays in data collection and analysis.

Through this workshop, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how cultural perspectives can inform more inclusive and meaningful approaches to data science and machine learning.
